MWD determined a need for rapid access to investigate the integrity of water distribution facilities immediately following significant earthquakes or other natural disasters. The solution was a helistop that would provide a place for chartered helicopters to land at the District's Weymouth Filtration Plant and Operations Center in La Verne. MWD retained Heliplanners to help determine the helistop's optimum location, to design it and to handle the heliport permitting process on the District's behalf. The result was a fully approved helistop located on an eight-acre concrete covered reservoir at MWD's facility. Only minor improvements (lighting, markings and a lighted windcone) were needed to turn the reservoir cover into an operational helistop. The facility is now completed and is ready to help meet Southern California's water system needs.
