In developing a new medical office building on campus, Hanford Community Medical Center found that the building would interrupt the single flight path to its existing at-grade helistop. Alternative flight paths for the helistop were not feasible due to obstruction clearance requirements. The Medical Center turned to Heliplanners to study and recommend alternatives to ensure continued helicopter service. After analyzing several alternatives, the study team decided that an elevated landing pad on an earthen mound outside the Medical Center's emergency entrance would provide the optimum combination of patient service, cost-effectiveness and operational safety. The round concrete helistop was built on an approximately seven-foot tall landscaped mound that both allowed continued auto parking in the immediate vicinity and significantly improved operational safety in terms of flights paths and obstruction clearance. Heliplanners not only assisted the Medical Center with site selection issues, but also assisted with the design and handled the entire entitlement process with city, county, state and federal agencies. The project was completed in 19--.
