An existing ground level helistop did not meet current obstruction clearance, marking and lighting criteria. Construction of a new emergency department offered the hospital a golden opportunity to include a new helistop on its roof, thus improving operational safety and access to emergency facilities. Heliplanners assisted FEC Heliports, the helideck supplier, with ensuring that the project would meet obstruction clearance and other design criteria as well as assisting with the FAA airspace determination application and processing. The helistop was designed with a hydronic snowmelt system to accommodate year-round operations at Flagstaff's 7,000-foot plus elevation. It included an elevated helicopter parking space to accommodate one of the hospital's Bell 407 helicopters as an extension to the elevated landing pad. The new helistop and emergency department were completed in 1998.
